What makes Ronaldinho one of the most successful soccer players in world today? Is it his skills with the soccer ball? His uncommon techiniques to impress the fans with the way he dribbles around the soccer field? The fact that he has appeared in many Nike commercials? His good looks? Or the fact that he has won many “World Player of the Year” awards?

The answer is: all of the above, and more. Ronaldinho, or as he is known in Brazil, Ronaldinho Gaucho, has been in the public eye since 1999, but it wasn't until around 2002, when this great Brazilian star “got his break”. Since then, the star of Ronaldinho Gaucho has only been getting bigger and bigger through the years.

Ronaldinho first became famous in Brazil under the name Ronaldinho (little Ronaldo) Gaucho (meaning he is from the Brazilian state Rio Grande do Sul), in order not to be confused with another Brazilian soccer star, Ronaldo (formally known as Ronaldinho in Brazil). However, when Ronaldo moved to Europe, he became well known only as Ronaldo, allowing Ronaldinho Gaucho to drop the “Gaucho” and be well known only as Ronaldinho.

In his adult life, Ronaldinho has been in three major soccer teams including Brazil's Gremio, France's Paris Saint-Germain, and Spain's always great Barcelona.

He is also one of a very few number of players to ever “play at every footballing level, for he has played at under 15, under 17, under 20, under 23, and senior level. He made his first ever appearance for Brazil playing against Scotland on 7 March1995 in an under 15s match, Brazil lost the game 1-0.” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronaldinho. He was also part of the first Brazilian team to ever win the under 17s championship, which took place in Egypt, 1997.

He then went on to become a part of the under 20s Brazilian team that played on the Fifa World Cup in 1999, and eventually made his first appearance in Brazil's national team that same year in the 1999 Copa America, in which Brazil won.

Since then, Ronaldinho has collected many awards such as “FIFA World Player of the Year” in 2004 and 2005, “World Soccer Player of the Year”, also in 2004 and 2005, “FIFPro World Player of the Year” in 2005 and 2006, “UEFA Clube Footballer of the Year” in 2005 and 2006, and many many others.

Ronaldinho's personality has also helped him become the star he is today. Even with top name awards under his belt, he still remains a very humble, down to earth guy. When asked about his status as the number one soccer player in the world, he simply said: “I don't even feel I'm the best at Barça.” (Barcelona), FourFourTwo magazine.

So there we go, Ronaldinho has clearly made his mark in the world of soccer, and continues to be a great star representing Brazil in a world wide level. What does the future have in store for Ronaldinho? His contract with Barcelona ends in 2010, other than that, all we have to do is simply just keep watching, as this boy from Rio Grande do Sul keeps re-writing soccer history.

After nearly a year of FIFA 09, I'm about ready for a new FIFA game to play. The past two or so months have been filled with anticipation for FIFA 10. EA Games provided us with video trailers, and pictures, just basic introductions to the game to get us excited. More recently, EA released the FIFA 10 demo, available in Europe before us North Americans could get our hands on it. Just like the demo, the game was to be released in Europe beforehand, and it's actually been out there for awhile. We've heard good things about it from Europeans and game reviewers, but North Americans really only have the demo to experience it for ourselves, for now. The demo has been great, it seems like everything that was wrong with FIFA 09 has been fixed, but we wont really know until the game is released on October 20, 2009. For now, we can only speculate as to what the game will be like, and thats what I aim to do in this preview.

The first thing I'm going to focus on- Where can you buy your copy of FIFA 10? Let's be honest here, a soccer game is going to have quite a hard time selling out in North American stores. I know that GameStop is offering a FIFA 10 preorder deal where you receive a year-long subscription to The Soccer Magazine when you preorder the game. But in all fairness, you're not going to really need to preorder the game in North America. Europe saw the game sell out quickly because of its higher popularity there, but it's different here. In terms of what stores will cary the game, GameStop, Best Buy, Wall-Mart, and others, are all likely to have it. Most stores that usually carry video games will probably have it on the release date, but I'd recommend you call in just to make sure.

EA Games, the makers of FIFA 10, have told us that FIFA 10 is jam-packed with loads of new features that will make FIFA 10 “the greatest soccer game ever made”. The first new feature that really got me interested was the Virtual Pro Mode. FIFA 09 featured the “Be a Pro” mode where you create a character and play games with him. The more games you play, the better your pro will get. FIFA 10 builds on this by allowing you to play with your created player in numerous new game modes, including online with other online gamers, and build a team filled with created players.

Another feature of FIFA 10 is GameFace. GameFace is a program that you can install on your computer. You upload a picture of your face and it makes a virtual player that looks just like you! From there, you can download the face on to your game system, where you can play Virtual Pro with your created face on your player! Virtual Pro and GameFace are the two features that make me most excited for the FIFA 10 release.

FIFA 09 had a lot of problems with dribbling. Many gamers felt that they did not have enough control over the player when dribbling. The new 360 degree dribbling feature allows for precise control over players when dribbling and lets you dribble around defenders in ways not before possible with FIFA 09. Overall, 360 dribbling allows for a more authentic dribbling experience and makes it less of a passing game all the time.

Like any other game series, the graphics are always supposed to improve with every new game. One thing that I believe EA Games has been great about is substantially improving the graphics with every new release of a FIFA game. I recommend that you go take a look at some of the screenshots that EA Games have provided us with so far on the FIFA 10 website. FIFA 09 had some problems with graphics on the faces of players, but that doesn't seem to be an issue anymore. With FIFA 10, everything just looks very real.

That's my preview of FIFA 10, for all of you North Americans out there like myself. I'm sure that Fifa 10 will be a big improvement from Fifa 09, which was already an excellent game. Until October 20, we're just going to have to make do with the demo which has already set high expectations for the full game.

After some struggles to earn promotion to the Bundesliga 1, Munich 1860 signed another American, reports Kicker. Striker, Josh Wolff, will be relied on to score goals in close matches to help the team escape second division soccer.

The Lions are currently only four points short of earning promotion. The team counts on a strong backline led by American defender, Gregg Berhalter, who appeared for the U.S. National Team in World Cups 2002 and 2006.

The former captain of Energie Cottbus helped the East German team climb into the Bundesliga 1 last season, only to remain in the Bundeliga 2 by signing with Munich 1860.

Wolff will join his American comrade after several successful campaigns in Major League Soccer. Wolff was a Fire original and played 84 matches for Chicago. While in the Windy City, the young striker tallied 32 goals.

After his success in Chicago, the Georgia native moved to Kansas City to play for the Wizards. While with the Wizards, Wolff put in 27 goals in 80 matches.

In 2003, Wolff suffered a meniscus tear and ankle injury which slowed his blistering pace significantly. However, the forward finished his last three MLS seasons healthy. Wolff scored 25 goals in the past three seasons with the Wizards and all but maxed out his salary under the league's tight cap.

Like most European teams, 1860 only signed the striker to an 18 month contract. The reasons for the short contract are multi-fold.

Few European teams will give any player pushing 30 more than a one year deal. The belief is by that age most players, especially forwards, are finished. Wolff is 29.

Munich 1860 also struggles with budget issues. Despite the team's recent success, previous pushes toward the “Big Show” have hurt Munich's funds. The team simply can't afford to issue a big contract.

Wolff is an American. Although signing American players is becoming more common in Europe, it is still viewed as a gamble. Despite appearing in two World Cups, Munich will keep in mind that he only scored once in both.

For Wolff, this move is elementary. His salary is largely fixed in the MLS, and he's still fairly young. For the forward to start preparing for retirement, he needed to go abroad. This move will help him further develop his on-field smarts and ideally help him establish a comfortable nest egg.

Here is the official Press Release from FIFA

    FIFA Press Release

The FIFA Emergency Committee decided yesterday, 11 May 2010, to suspend the Salvadoran Football Association (FESFUT) on account of government interference. This decision by FIFA is based on the fact that the statutes ratified by the FESFUT general assembly in August 2009 have not been formally entered in the country’s official register, and that the government has failed to acknowledge the authority of the Normalisation Committee set up to represent FESFUT.

Consequently, FIFA considered that it was not possible for FESFUT to organise the elective general assembly in line with the action plan that had been drawn up and has suspended FESFUT until the Salvadoran authorities formally accept the legitimacy of the Normalisation Committee installed by FIFA and sign the new statutes that were adopted by the FESFUT general assembly in August 2009.

If the Salvadoran authorities do not revise their position by noon (GMT) on 8 June 2010, the FIFA Executive Committee will be obliged to propose to the FIFA Congress that FESFUT be suspended. If the Congress upholds this proposal, it will not be possible to lift the suspension until the next FIFA Congress in June 2011.

Furthermore, during the period of suspension, FESFUT will not be able to be represented in any regional or international competitions. For example, the refereeing trio selected for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ will not be able to participate in this competition if FESFUT remains suspended.

Despite the seriousness of this situation, the FIFA Executive Committee has expressed its full support for the FESFUT Normalisation Committee, the authority currently recognised by FIFA

The “dumb” was unnecessary, although others and myself have received far worse descriptives from you.

My assumption here is that FIFA is a non-profit organization (it might be stinkingly corrupt, but that is a separate matter), and therefore re-distributes all its revenues, after costs. Why would you want to treat any differently from any charity? the scale of FIFA’s revenue is massive (and shocking to me, because I simply don’t get the attraction of soccer as entertainment), but it does not change anything to the principle.

    As per your other ideas:

    a) Local profits from trading by FIFA limited companies

OK, so I guess you would suggest taxing Greenpeace and/or Amnesty International as well?

    b) The players earnings in SA

That is a weird one: I agree players’ earnings should be taxed (are they earning anything, since they are playing for their national side?), but should that not be in their country of residence. Put it like this: if a professional is based in London and is sent for 1 month to South Africa on a non-recurring assignment, where should he/she be taxed?

    c) All local broadcast profits

I don’t know about the South African media market, but if it is like in the US, the profits will be taxed. Assume ESPN buys the rights and generates advertising revenues during broadcasts. The profit is taxable at the corporate rate. I suppose that the local equivalent of ESPN is no different.

    d) Image rights exprted

I do not understand what you mean. The biggest benefitor of the event in terms of image (if it goes well) should be South Africa itself. Should the country tax itself, and if so, on what?

The real question is to what extent a government should underwrite this type of events. To me, it appears perfectly pointless to build massive new stadia if there is no commercial justification to do so. If a commercial rationale exists, private capital should be available. This would allow the South African government to allocate its resources to much more urgent priorities.

Every day a World Cup in South Africa draws a small closer, as well as as a outrageous football air blower myself we would be fibbing if we pronounced we wasn’t a tad excited. So it seems have been a guys over during Sony, they appear to be starting to impassioned lengths to yield a good World Cup knowledge for those who aren’t advantageous sufficient to be upon a craft to Jo’burg themselves.

In conditions of televisions they have introduced an tasteful Sony trade-in scheme, broadcasting comparison World Cup games in 3D TV to symbol a arise as well as a ultimate complement in to their World Cup credentials is not a damaged metatarsal, though a streaming use that allows owners of internet continuous Sony BRAVIA TVs or Blu-Ray players to perspective a pick up of World Cup matches.

Unfortunately, prior to we get as well excited, this is no live streaming use giving we entrance to this year’s World Cup (however we will be means to watch that upon BBC HD as well as ITV HD). Instead, they will yield their pick up of mythological World Cup matches as well as even a tip twenty moments movie formed upon a many prestigious foe in football.

All of this, as well as more, will be accessible by a BRAVIA Internet Video service, that gives existent as well as impending BRAVIA owners entrance to locate up services such as Demand Five. In addition, Sony have additionally cumulative a understanding with LOVEFILM, permitting business to tide full length cinema to their HDTV or Blu-Ray player. It’s all terribly available as well as will be a acquire further to a ever-growing list of methods to watch TV.

All of this has been brought about by Sony’s brand new partnership with FIFA, that intends to move not usually TV, though all kinds of multimedia party to a vital room together with games as well as movies.

Speaking upon a announcement, Christian Brown, Senior Category Marketing Manager for Home Entertainment, Sony UK, said:

“We have been really vehement to suggest a catalog of a FIFA World Cup Collection to consumers in time for a 2010 FIFA World Cup. Thanks to BRAVIA Internet Video as well as a partnership with FIFA, we can have a little of a biggest football moments come to hold up in consumers’ vital bedrooms opposite Europe during a hold of a button.”

Flamengo has won its sixth Brazilian Championship by beating Gremio 2 x 1, to tie Sao Paulo for the team with the most Brazilian national soccer tournaments in history.

Adriano, the former Inter Milan striker, who had a serious career low just a few months ago, has resurrected his career in grand style, not only winning the most coveted tournament in Brazil, but also concluding the competition as its top scorer with 19 goals.

While living in Brazil in the 80s, I was one of the few fortunate people who had the priviledge to see up close the Flamengo Golden generation of Zico, Junior and Leandro, and I was lucky enough to be there in Maracana when Flamengo won that 1982 Brazilian championship.

Last August, I visited Brazil and met with Adriano and several members of theFlamengo team at their training camp in Rio. At that point, Flamengo was in 17th place in the “Brasileirao”, and if I had told anyone at that time that I tought they would end up as champions just three months later, no one would have believed me.

Being a former striker myself, I clearly remember my chat with Adriano as we discussed ways to dodge markers and how to improve the team's midfield to forward connection and other aspects of the game.

As one of the most die-hard Flamengo fans you can ever find, I could not be any happier to see that not only did Adriano figure out how to dodge those markers, but I am also happy that the team has found its compass and has combined extremely well, and went on to do the impossible: to move from 17th to 1st place in the most important national-level soccer tournament in the whole of South America, in a time span of only three months.

That night in August, as I used to do so many times back in the 80s when I was living in Brazil, I had the pleasure of accompanying the team to Maracana Stadium, and watched as Flamengo beat Atletico Mineiro, which was at that time the team that was in first.

That day in August I had no idea, but that very same game I watched was to be the first of a series of a spectacular comeback performances, not only for Adriano but also for Flamengo.

Today after winning the championship match, Adriano stated that “this is a dream, to be a champion again and, above all, to be happy” . And, his feeling is shared by millions of Brazilians, who are fans of the largest Club in Brazil: CRF (Clube the Regatas do Flamengo).

Adriano, who has earned the nickname “The Emperor” while playing in Italy, was once, not very long ago, the most feared striker in the world.

After having a series of personal problems, the Emperor was released by Inter Milan and joined Flamengo, the team that had discovered him for soccer. There he regained his old form and even managed to reclaim a spot on the Brazilian National squad during the World Cup qualifiers.

It remains to be seen if this performance on the Brasileirao will be enough to earn Adriano a spot in the 2010 World Cup team. But regardless, Adriano has written a major page in his personal soccer story, and helped Flamengo regain its status as one of the greatest teams, if not the greatest, in the history of Brazilian soccer.

“Club Deportivo Victoria fall 3-0 to Deportivo Marquense” or something along those lines was certainly one of the top stories across Central America three days ago as the final brackets for the 2007 CONCACAF Champion's Cup takes shape. Marquense, a Guatemalan club, trounced the Honduran side, Victoria, to secure the final position for Central American contenders.

The other two Central American representatives took to the pitch on Wednesday to decide who would take the lead for the Central Americans in qualification. Puntarenas F.C. hosted C.D. Olimpia in Costa Rica and just snuck by the Hondurans 3-2 with a goal from Alvaro Guerrero in the final minute of play. This match helped determine the hierarchy for the draw which will place teams in the final brackets for the CONCACAF Club Championship.

Currently, the “pots” look something like this. “Pot A” for Mexico and the United States has only three of the four teams decided as the Liga Mexicana has not finished its Apetura for 2006. CF Pachuca was the first Mexican side to qualify for the regional tournament after winning the Clausura earlier this year.

Major League Soccer will send D.C. United, who finished the regular season with the best record in league, and the Houston Dynamo, who won the MLS Cup.  D.C. United is one of two American teams to have won the regional tournament, but the last time United won was in 1998.

Last year, both American sides were knocked out of the tournament in the opening round, but this year promises to be different. The traditional powers from Central America struggled to earn berths into the tournament. Niether Saprissa nor Alajuelense from Costa Rica nor Municipal of Guatemala earned spots in the big show. Also, of the traditional Mexican favorites only one can earn a spot in the upcoming championship. With Pachuca eating up one of Liga Mexicana's berths, it will be impossible for Club America and Pumas to make an appearance.

Also of note, with only one week of play left in the regular season, Cruz Azul holds the top spot in Liga Mexicana. Cruz Azul has had successful runs in the CONCACAF Club Championship in both 1996 and 1997 but is often not consider one of the region's dominant powers.

“Pot B” is also waiting for its fourth and final team. The first three teams to qualify for this group were the Central American teams, Puntarenas (CRC), Olimpia (HON), and Marquense (GUA). The fourth position will go to the winner of the Caribbean tournament. This fifteen team tournament is often won by a team from Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago, but with Portmore United (JAM) and Defense Force (TNT) out of contention, this final spot could go to almost anyone.

The champions for Trinidad and Jamaica are still held as the favorites, so teams will be weary of W Connection and Waterhouse F.C., but other teams should feel confident to leave their mark on this year's tournament. The Puerto Rico Islanders of the United Soccer Leagues will certainly have a fair shot if they can manage to get past W Connection of Trinidad and Tobago. Unfortunately for the Islanders, their top striker Alen Marcina, who scored 13 goals this summer, recently signed with the Knights in the Australian League.

In the end, the Cental American and Caribbean teams will likely be weaker than usual. This gives the edge to the teams from Mexico and the United States. Olimpia from Honduras is likely the best team from “Pot B”. Olimpia boasts a roster which features four members of the Honduran National Team: Figueroa, Valladares, Palacios, and Morales. Although Puntarenas gave a good showing against Olimpia earlier this week, Kurt Bernard will not be able to carry the team through the regional tournament. The same can also be said of Carlos Quinonez, who plays in back for Marquense and the Guatemalan National Team.

As for the other section, both D.C. United and Pachuca will likely struggle. D.C. finished the MLS season poorly. A lack of communication between Facundo Erpen and Bobby Boswell seemed to cause lots of confusion in the back. The team dominated the first half of the MLS regular season but couldn't seem to buy a win after the All-Star break. Although United has been the most successful American team when facing foreign opposition, including a 4-0 win over Celtic this year, D.C. will need to find a new way to shine to have any success in the upcoming tournament.

Pachuca has more potential than D.C., but only because their Apetura campaign has been fairly successful. However, they do not face the toughest competition in their league. With America, Pumas, and Toluca in one group and with Chivas and Cruz Azul in another, Pachuca's table simply doesn't look as tough as the other two. What may actually hurt Pachuca in the tournament isn't their form, but the lack of a big name player to carry the burden can be devasting for a team in this kind of tournament.

The current favorite to take the final Mexican slot in the regional tourament is Cruz Azul, whose roster includes two members of the Mexican National Team: Gerardo Torrado and Jose Rafael Garcia Torres. The experiences these players carry with them into these kinds of competitions always serves a team well. If Cruz Azul takes the final open slot, look for them to do very well. This team would have a very real chance of winning the CONCACAF Championship.

Of the team's that have already qualified, the Houton Dynamo look the best on paper. As the San Jose Earthquakes, this franchise made a number of appearances in the CONCACAF Championship but never managed to win the title. The team has won three MLS Cups since 2001 and has a very solid core group of players. Left wing Brad Davis and forward Brian Ching have spent a fair amount of time with the U.S. National Team, as has defensive midfielder Ricardo Clark.

However, the real key to this team will be the play of their two stars from Canada. Dwayne De Rosario will have to marshal the troops from the “number ten” position for the team to mount a powerful attack. At the other end, Pat Onstad will likely be kept busy in the nets if the Central American teams are successful in using a direct style of play.

The team has plenty of guns with Venezuelan Alejandro Moreno, Paul Dalglish the son of the famed Kenny Dalglish, Brian Ching, and Dwayne De Rosario playing on the attacking side of the ball. If their midfield and defense can hold off the typically strong Central American counterattacks, the Dynamo have a very real shot of being the first MLS team to take the regional cup since the 2000 L.A. Galaxy.

The Dynamo proved that they have the ability to face impossible odds when Brian Ching equalised in the second overtime period only a minute after New England took a 1-0 lead during the MLS Cup. If the team can muster that kind of confidence during this tournament, even a team like Cruz Azul will struggle against the current American champions come the end of February.

An increase in web bookings for accommodations and tickets for the World Cup in South Africa has spurred local online users to warn about an uptick in cybercrime in the region.

Africa is currently facing an increase in phishing attacks in which criminals try to extract bank account information in order to steal money from unsuspecting bank customers. Meanwhile, South Africa is hosting the World Cup from June to July this year, with millions of people already making online bookings for tickets and accommodations.

South Africa is Africa's second-largest telecom market in terms of investment and subscription while Nigeria, Africa's largest telecom market, is ranked number three in the world in terms of cybercrime. Cybercrime in the region has further increased following the landing last year of Seacom and Teams international cables, which are starting to lower bandwidth and Internet connectivity costs.

Africa is experiencing an explosion of mobile money services as banks and mobile providers compete with customers who would otherwise not have a bank account. This has increased phishing attacks on unsuspecting customers, in efforts to lure them to fake sites and get their bank details.

The problem has been heightened by the fact that very few African countries have a legal framework for cybercrime prevention, or the skills, equipment and organisational abilities to fight cybercrime. Zambia, for example, has a computer misuse law that calls for convicted hackers to be sentenced to jail for up to 25 years, but the country has no equipment and organisational infrastructure to fight cybercrime.

“The problem is that so many people are competing for tickets to the World Cup. In the process, many of them are getting swindled through phishing and fake online promotions for tickets to the event,” said Walter Tapfumanei, communication officer, Africa Agency for ICT Development.

Scammers are also using SMSes to impersonate big company officials and send messages to potential victims saying that they have won tickets to the FIFA 2010 World Cup. In other e-mail, the contact would claim to have been awarded a huge mining contract and would invite the “investor” to the country where they would meet with fake government officials.

Symantec Africa Regional Director Gordon Love said South Africa is experiencing an increase in spam and many other cybercriminal activities including government Web site defacements. As a result of increasing phishing and many other cybercrime activities in South Africa before the World Cup, Symantec has launched a special Web site where it will keep Internet users updated with related attacks and how to access and buy genuine World Cup tickets.

USA National Team striker Jozy Altidore announced on his Twitter page today that he has joined English Premier League soccer club Hull subject to a work permit. Altidore wrote, “First match is against Chelsea subject to a work permit … thanks for the support and love keep it coming.”

This huge news is another boost for USA soccer fans as Altidore is a first choice striker for the US Men's National Team even at his young age of 19. Oguchi Onyewu, another USA National Team starter, joined soccer giants A.C. Milan earlier this summer. Since this August starts the beginning of most European domestic league schedules, this move may be the last major splash announcement for a U.S. player.

With the World Cup looming next June 2010 in South Africa, the USA team wants to have its players peaking at just that time. Onyewu and Altidore are major parts of the USA team. Altidore, in particular, could use a full season of top-level competition. He moved to Spanish team Villareal in 2008 but only played in 6 games and was then loaned to a lower division side.

Altidore showed not only his potential but also his present capabilities as he helped the USA to the final of the FIFA Confederations Cup this summer. In particular, his goal against Spain was memorable for his positioning, technique, composure, and strength. Even though Spain is considered the best national team in the world, Altidore played with loads of confidence against them.

“Clint Dempsey gave me a great pass for the first goal, and I'm a big boy so I was able to hold the defender off,” stated Altidore after the Spain Confederations Cup game. “This was not the first game we've shown our quality as a team. We try to get better all the time,” said Altidore.

Altidore was criticized by some for his play in the final of the Confederation Cup against Brazil. After returning from injury and not getting meaninfgul playing time for his club side, Altidore admitted that he was not in ideal game shape for the tournament. If Altidore's Confederations Cup form was sub-par, the USA soccer team has a lot to look forward to next summer in South Africa and for years to come. English Premier League defenders and World Cup defenders may be forced to deal with an in-shape and in-form Altidore.

Hull City survived its first year in the English Premiership during the 2008-2009 season as it was the first time in its 104 year existence that it made it to the top level of English soccer. After avoiding relegation last season, Hull is hoping to improve its team and hopefully Atlidore will do the trick up top at striker.

  • Great Soccer Managers

    April 8th, 2010

My favorite Fussball-Trikot: HP Laptop kaufen

There is a few great soccer managers who have had a golden touch, who have brought trophies to their clubs or country. Both past and present, great managers.

    Herbert Chapman:

Herbert Chapman, the visionary of the 1920s and '30s is regarded to be one of the great managers. With Huddersfield and then Arsenal, he won the league and FA cup on numerous occasions. Arsenal became the dominant team of the '30s, thanks to his management and WM formation. He also advocated such innovations as floodlights and numbered shirts, which are now standard.

    Jock Stein:

Soccer's miracle worker worked wonders with Glasgow Celtic in the 1960s. Celtic's domination of Scotland resulted in an unprecedented 9 straight league titles in the era and then a famous European Cup win over the Italian team Inter Milan in 1967. As such, he was the first Scot to win the trophy.

    Bill Shankly:

The hero of the kop is credited with laying the foundations for Liverpool's golden decades, in the '60s. Shankly won numerous FA Cups, league titles and a UEFA cup with Liverpool, before handing the reigns to Bob Paisley for further domestic and European trophies in the 1970s.

    Bob Paisley:

Shankly's successor, Paisley, won three European Cups with Liverpool. In Europe and domestically, the trophies came and came again to Anfield, as Liverpool beat most that stood before them. Overall, Paisley won more trophies than any other Liverpool manager has.

    Sir Alf Ramsey:

Why include Sir Alf? Simply because he is the only England manager to have actually won the World Cup, in 1966. Recalling, that England have had some notable managers like Revie who never actually came close to such a feet. An astute tactician, his 4-4-2 formation has also become standard in English football. Also recalling, his title winning Ipswich team that won the league in their first season after promotion. 1973 aside, England's best ever manager, bar none.

    Matt Busby:

Sir Matt Busby was the first Manchester Utd manager to win the European Cup. In addition, during the 1950s and '60s he won numerous league titles and cups for the club. Most famous of his teams, were dubbed the Busby babes. He was also a long-serving league manager. To many, he remains the clubs best manager.

    Marcello Lippi:

The Italian manager won numerous league titles with Juventus, as well as a European Cup during the 1990s. Most recently, he won the 2006 world cup with Italy. With such honors won, is one of the best managers of recent times.

Undoubtedly, these are some of the great soccer managers. They have won numerous honours with their clubs or country, and some of the biggest trophies in the game. Aside from this, the likes of Chapman and Ramsey introduced astute tactical innovations like the 4-4-2 and 4-2-4.

“It's a dream come true, to become head coach at my alma mater,” said Ryerson. “UNLV has made such a big impact on my life, its been the foundation for everything I've accomplished and experienced in the sport of soccer.

"I want to thank the guys that were here in the '70s and started the program and everything that's been done to continue the success of Rebel soccer. I'm also looking forward to getting in touch with the alumni and the local community, as their future support of UNLV men's soccer will be key to our success here. Today is also a big day for the Ryerson family. UNLV has meant so much to us, and it's a big honor and privilege to help continue the Rebel tradition."

One of four Ryerson brothers to play for the Rebels (Rob, Kenny, Tim), Rich Ryerson was a four-year starting defender/midfielder for the Rebels from 1983-86 and led UNLV to three NCAA tournament appearances and three straight conference championships during his time in Las Vegas. In his junior season, the Rebels posted a program-best 18-2-2 mark and No. 4 final national ranking. A two-time all-region and all-conference selection, Ryerson scored 20 goals and had 20 assists. Ryerson started all 84 games during his time as a Rebel and still holds school records for both most career games played and most career starts. Ryerson was also named one of Soccer America’s Top-10 Freshmen of the Year in 1983.

Ryerson graduated from UNLV in 1987 with a bachelor’s of science degree in business administration. He went on to play a total of 10 years in several professional soccer leagues, including two in Kinna, Sweden, and finished his career in 1998 with the Baton Rouge Bombers of the Eastern Indoor Soccer League, where he was named the EISL’s Defensive Player of the Year.

Beginning in 1994, Ryerson served as athletic director and physical education teacher for the Marywood-Palm Valley School, a K-12 program in Rancho Mirage, Calif, and he held that position until 2006 when he moved back to Las Vegas. He served as Director of Coaching for the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club for the past two years but will be stepping down from that position after accepting the Rebels' head job. This past year Ryerson was the Nevada state vice president for US Youth Soccer, and will be changing positions to director of coaching for the association this coming season.

Ryerson is the fifth UNLV graduate in any sport to become head coach at the school, following Tina Kunzer-Murphy in women's tennis (1978-81), Wayne Nunnely in football (1986-89), Dan Abdalla in women's soccer (2000-04), and Kathy Olivier in women's basketball (2008-present). Ryerson is married to the former Vanes Valenzuela and they have two children, Vashti (14) and Payton (11).

On Saturday (April 10), the Philadelphia Union will play its first home game. As a soccer fan, I have been waiting a long time for Philadelphia to get a MLS (Major League Soccer) team and that happy event happened this year. The Union played its first ever game two weeks ago and coming up is its first home game. In honor of this wonderful event, I thought I would do a post about early soccer prints.

Soccer has ancient roots, for variations of “football” were played during the Han Dynasty in China (206 BC–25 AD), by the ancient Greeks and Romans, and in Japan during the sixth century. The earliest modern form of the game was played in Great Britain in the twelfth century. This game was very popular but fell into royal disfavor, being banned several times in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. In 1349, the game was prohibited by a royal edict “because it cooperated with other favorite amusements to impede the progress of archery.”

This early game was close to the modern game of soccer, or as most of the world still calls it, football. The core of this game involved two teams each trying to kick a ball across a goal line. By the middle of the nineteenth century, various quite distinct forms of football had evolved, with the nature of the field, number of players, and other rules varying considerably. At first all forms of football prohibited carrying the ball, but-–according to a possibly apocryphal story–-in 1823 William Webb Ellis, a student at the Rugby School, disregarded this rule by picking up the ball and running across the goal line. Soon a separate branch of the game, which allowed the ball to be carried, had evolved, the origin of today's rugby and American football.

In England, the kicking form of football continued to evolve, especially in English schools and universities, but also in various public clubs. Efforts to standardize the rules culminated in 1863 with the formation of the London Football Association formed by several London clubs. They established a uniform code of rules, defining “association football,” and establishing the basis of today's game. As it happen “soccer,” is derived from “asSOCiation.”

The English, including soldiers, ex-pats, and travelers, exported their game around the world. In America, what we would call soccer was not very common. In the 1860s, the Oneida Football Club of Boston probably played a similar game and some American colleges played a game inspired by the Football Association rules, though their game soon took on the form more of rugby, eventually turning into American football. There were a number of Football Association leagues formed towards the end of the century, and by the early twentieth century the name “soccer” began to be used as the primary name in America for this form of the game.

In the nineteenth century, other than the “gentleman's sports” of hunting, fishing, and horse racing, most sports had not achieved the status to have separately issued prints made of them, at least in any great number. Thus for most sports, including soccer, one mostly finds early prints from the illustrated newspapers of the day, like Harper's Weekly or Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper.

There are some antique prints showing some of the early forms of soccer. In America, a version of football with teams consisting of many players was played by Civil War troops. This game had elements of today's soccer, rugby and football. Wood engravings from Harper's Weekly provide some of the first pictures of this popular game. Most prints showing soccer from the nineteenth century were issued in British illustrated papers, such as the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News. Today, at the dawn of professional soccer in Philadelphia, it is fun to look back at the history of the game and of its early iconography.

After high school and college ball, flag football is a great way to stay competitive, stay in shape and be part of a team. With flag football becoming a popular pastime among men in their twenties this holiday shopping list will be sure to please the football enthusiast in your life. New leagues are forming all over the country and interest in this sport has been growing in recent years.

    10. A new pair of cleats.

Women have boots, kids have toys and men have cleats! It is a basic story of the right accessory for the day. Cleats start to smell and are usually gross and muddy after a few games. If you buy him a new pair, he will look better, he will smell better and heck, he might even think he can play better.

    9. Under Amour.

Under Amour is an amazing product that keeps sweat off your body. It keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It is a great alternative to layering on baggy bulky clothes and looks better too. Make him feel like a pro by wearing the same gear that they do. They make everything from hats to shirts and more for keeping any part of your body protected no matter what the season.

    8. An Official NFL or NCAA Football.

Most flag football leagues require an official size football and most can be expensive. Most leagues will not let you play if you do not have this specific type of ball. Usually it must be leather rather than the stickier composite material found at most sporting goods stores. I recommend a Wilson football, as they are the official football of the National Football League and are easily found in most stores.

    7. Color Coordinated Accessories.

Most teams have colors on their team jerseys. For those girls who know nothing about teams and colors if you match those colors you are usually safe. Buy anything to help him play like gloves, socks, wristbands and armbands. If he plays during winter months, give him a warm knit hat in the team colors. He will appreciate the gesture of you buying something with his team colors on it. Please note that a lot of leagues will not allow players to wear hats with rims like baseball caps for safety reasons, so I would stick with soft knit hats, or other accessories.

    6. Receiver Gloves.

Receiver gloves are meant to help a player catch or hold on to a football. They vary in degree of stickiness and can be color coordinated to match the team colors. They do come in sizes from small to x-large, so you would need to know what size your boyfriend is. Glove prices range from $19.99 and can be over $100 depending on the quality of the glove. After a few years of use they wear out so a new pair is always better then an old pair.

    5. Big Gatorade Type Water Jug.

Make your boyfriend the hit of the team at the next game. When he shows up with a huge gallon jug of Gatorade in the big orange bucket he will be sure to be the team favorite. Most guys come to games using their own tired water bottles. This way they can share, hydrate and even dump the whole thing on the coach if they win living out all their pro fantasies.

    4. New Gear Bag.

Instead of going to the games with your boyfriend’s equipment in a plastic grocery store bag, why not buy him a nice new gear bag. He can probably use it for all sorts of things; not just games but at least he will look more official going to the flag football field. It is good to find a bag that has a separate compartment for the shoes from the rest of the bag to keep the dirty stuff separate from anything else like a clean pair of clothes and gear. Also small pockets for car keys, wallet and cell phone are always handy.

    3. First Aid Kit

Not only is it required by most leagues for someone on every team to have a first aid kit, but also it is probably not a bad idea for your boyfriend to leave in his car anyway. Although flag football is not a full on contact sport, guys do get hurt on occasion. Most basic kits come filly stocked, but for sports make sure your kit have bandages, athletic tape, gauze and antibacterial-cleaning agents for wounds. If you want to look for a fancier kit, you can look for ones with ice packs, aspirin, and heating packs. Most stores like K Mart or Target have first aid kits in varying sizes and price points. This might not be something your boyfriend would ask for, but something he needs.

    2. Speed Parachutes.

These are small parachutes that you attach around your waist that provide resistance when you run. These are great for improving the speed and strength of your lower body as well as for general fitness. These are used during practice or during personal training. The cost for one of these is about $50 and can be found online.

    1. Flag Belts.

What is a flag football game without flag belts? They come in most colors and several different styles. The most popular style is the “triple threat belt” which has three flags attached to it. If possible try to find out the league rules before purchasing the, or ask your boyfriend’s preference. However if you are playing for fun choose any style that you like. Flag belts are priced at $39.99 for a dozen, and come in a variety of sizes from youth to adult extra large.
